The Chinook is a medium-lift tactical transport helicopter, that for many years has been used throughout the globe for heavy-duty battlefield support. The HC Mk 1 version used by the RAF is based on the US Army CH-47C model that has been built since the late 1960s. The original design dates back to the 1950s, when the US Army needed a helicopter for greater transport mobility. It flew for the first time in 1961. During the Vietnam War the Chinook was used for transporting supplies, troops and weapons to the front line. In March 1980, the Royal Air Force received its first 33 converted Chinook HC.1s, which served in 3 squadrons. A special feature of these machines was that they were equipped with a 3-point cargo handling system with lifting hook for external loads up to 9.5 tons. This version later received larger rotor blades made of fibreglass and a hydraulic winch. The carrying capacity is 44 fully equipped soldiers or 24 stretchers with wounded. The title version shown here for No. 18 Squadron was presented in 1990 at the 75th anniversary celebrations. In total over 506 of the CHJ-47C helicopter were produced.
